I love all the suggestions from everyone! It's just what we needed!!! I got a text message last night from a friend, Jami, with the solution below. She, along with Monica (from the original post), suggested that we move the love-seat to the left side of the room. This is how we had the room setup for months - but it didn't work well with company (harder to talk to people in the kitchen so guests NEVER sat in the family room). However, I think that once the room is actually welcoming (i.e. a rug, things on the walls, decorations, table, curtains, etc), things will change things a lot!! The main thing that I NEVER considered when thinking about layout, is the role that curtains can play. With the couch on the left, even with a chair (where that ottoman is) on the right, the room looks really unbalanced. BUT - I think curtains (and something on the bare wall next to the door) might be able to really add the needed weight to that side of the room. Am I right?? Will it balance it enough? All along, we haven't planned to have curtains. We almost had a modern looking motorized roll-down installed - yep, it's pre-wired for it... but I think curtains are needed in this case.
So what do you think of this solution? I like that we only need an 8x10 rug, we only need to make one furniture purchase (chair), the outlet is in the perfect place for a table, and we get to utilize the love-seat (so we're all setup for movies and football). Also, the view outside isn't blocked, the rug is centered in the room, and the rug is "anchored" by the chair (I read a "rule" that at least one piece of furniture should be on the rug to anchor it). Thoughts??! Thank you SO MUCH again for all your comments!!
